"I don't like chicken, but I liked this sandwich," said Walter Ostanek, Canada's Polka King, pointing at Tim Hortons's new Crispy Chicken Sandwich. He, along with the PR folks at Timmies, swung by the iVillage.ca office on Wednesday to give us a bit of a taste-test of the brand's newest lunachable. Walter was there to convince me to do the Chicken Dance to his accordian beats (you'll see why below). Though the dancing and jigging was fun, the question remained: was the new menu item any good?
The What: According to NPD research, breaded chicken sandwiches are the most popular sandwich variety at fast food joints in Canada — their popularity grew some 9 per cent last year. It was to fill the growing need for this kind of sammie that Tim Hortons created a Crispy Chicken Sandwich.
The Price: $4.99
The Trial: Three of us seized the chance to gobble down this new sandwich (each of us are long-time fans of a variety of the foods the company makes), and, much to our surprise, we enjoyed it. All of us agreed that most chicken sandwiches are greasy and overloaded with mayo. This one was not. The breaded white breast comes with a dab of mayo, some lettuce and a slice or two of tomato. The bun is basic. The piece of chicken is lightly seasoned and a bit spicy — it's a peppery heat, though, nothing too intense. The sandwich gets bonus points for being, sort of, healthy: at only 440 calories and 2 grams of saturated fat, it's better than most options on fast food menus.
So what would we change about the sandwich? We all wanted more lettuce (the one piece we had was a wee bit wilted). And depending on whether you eat the item immediately or pick it up at the resto and eat it at home, you may want to skip tomato (it could make the bread soggy).
The Verdict: If you're in a pinch, this sandwich is a delicious lunchtime option.
*Back to polkaing: To celebrate this new menu item, Tim Hortons is inviting people to post a video of themselves doing the "Chicken Dance" to Instagram or Twitter @TimHortons or using the hashtag #CrispyChickenDance. Those who post may win a Tim Card to try the sandwich.
