Everyone loves Santa Claus. Especially Tokyo Police Club‘s Dave Monks who wrote this song to make sure Santa returns every Christmas Eve.
Merry Quizmas with Tokyo Police Club's Dave Monks
What are your Christmas traditions?
“My favourite tradition is being at my parent’s house for Christmas with my sister.”
Favourite Christmas memory?
“I can tell you the one that my parents like to recount to neighbours that come by about my childhood…I got a Lego set for Christmas when I was 7 or 8. It was a Robin Hood castle and I loved it. I spent the whole day building it with my dad who was on his hands and knees for like 6 hours making this Lego thing. Then the next year, on some strange recommendation, they got me a train set. I politely got my dad to describe how to put the train set together, holding back my disappointment, watching the train go around the track once and saying, ‘Wow dad, thank you so much…can we play the Lego set now?’ They still get me Lego sets!”
The best Christmas movie of all time?
Dave: “Is Doctor Strange a Christmas movie?”
Graham: “The Simpsons Roasting on an Open Fire where they get Santa’s Little Helper.”
- Favourite: ‘Carol of the Bells’, ‘The Nutcracker Suite’ and Bruce Springsteen’s ‘Santa Claus Is Comin’ to Town.’
- Most hated: “Someone ironically liking the Bieber Christmas.”
What’s the #1 thing on your Christmas list?
“I have a big mess on the top of my dresser with all your daily stuff and I just need like a box that I can put everything in.”
What’s the worst gift you’ve ever received?
“Apart from the train set and the continuing Lego sets that my mom gives me…”
When do you do your Christmas shopping?
“Last minute obviously but also, I don’t have that many people to buy for. I don’t have a big local family and I don’t care about my friends. I’m not a Good Samaritan anyway. I actually got a gift for the guys who work at the laundromat by my house, but it started way too much of a friendship with them and I couldn’t just drop my laundry off anymore. So word to the wise, don’t be so generous and kind. You might have to get to know people.”
Christmas time favourites
- Decorations: “There’s a new Simpsons decoration hanging on the Monks’ tree every year. It’s pretty weighed down with them now.”
- Treats: “My mom makes this Christmas pudding which I think might be this English or Irish thing. It’s got whisky on it and you light it on fire.”
- Drinks: “I feel like it’s about the dad beers because I’m always drinking my dad’s beer at Christmas.”
Are you on the naughty or nice list this year?
“Nice – uhmm I’m thinking too deeply about it…I’m not a nasty person. You make your own judgments.”
A Christmas greeting to all Canadians:
Graham: “What does Krusty say? Merry Christmas, a happy Hanukah, a kwaaazy Kwanzaa, a solemn and dignified Ramadan.”
