Katy Perry is feeling the heat after sharing a picture of the Hindu goddess Kali Ma to her Instagram account on Wednesday.
While the image, which the 32-year-old pop star captioned “current mood”, has been liked over 250,000 times, many angry social media users are also criticizing the post for being “offensive” towards the Divine Mother and the Hindu religion.
“This is a shameful and offensive act,” one upset user wrote. “You can’t compare yourself with The Great Goddess KALI MAA.” Another commentator added, “Please do not compare yourself with God!! You can have any kind of mood you want, but you must respect other religions also!!”
Meanwhile, other users came to the defense of the singer. One fan wrote, “I don’t understand, what’s in there to be offended. I am a very proud Indian, but not at all offended by this.” Someone else added, “Come on everyone… it’s nothing to get offended about… She didn’t disrespect. I’m also Hindu and a proud Indian.”
Perry recently spoke out on her Christian upbringing during her cover story interview with Vogue for May 2017. As the daughter of evangelical Christian pastors, Perry recalls handing out pamphlets titled, “How to Find God”, at a Marilyn Manson concert in Santa Barbara and not being “allowed to interact with gay people.”
“My house was church on Sunday morning, church on Sunday night, church on Wednesday evening,” the singer says. “You don’t celebrate Halloween; Jesus gives you your Christmas presents; we watch Bill O’Reilly on TV. That was my whole childhood and youth and early teens. I still have conditioned layers dropping off of me by the day.”
In a 2013 interview with Marie Claire, the singer explained that she doesn’t align herself with a particular religion. “I don’t believe in heaven or hell or an old man sitting on a throne,” she said. “I’m not Buddhist, I’m not Hindu, I’m not Christian, but I still feel like I have a deep connection with God. I pray all the time – for self-control, for humility.”
