Neil Young has been on fire lately. Having just released his most recent studio album, Peace Trail, last year and recently seen in studio with rapper D.R.A.M., the man has been busy lately. In fact, just last week he and Promise of the Real released a new song, “Children of Destiny”, that you can listen to below.
On top of all this activity, Young has found the time to scour his old audio vaults and put together a collection of old acoustic + vocal tracks that had been gathering dust. The album, titled Hitchhiker, is due out on August 4 and will feature a 10-track set. The album consists of a few of Young’s favourites as well as a pair of previously unreleased performances, “Hawaii” (a press release calls it “a soaring ballad … unlike anything else Young had recorded at the time”) and “God Give Me Strength” which was “occasionally performed live in the mid-70s but [is] now available here for the first time.”
Speaking of available, here’s God Give Me Strength live from 1976:
The album features Young performing with just his voice and a single acoustic guitar and was originally recorded by producer David Briggs. According to the Hitchhiker press release, the two men were the sole people in the room during the recording session. To prep for release, the tapes were sent to post-production where they were given a once-over by John Hanlon, who has been mixing for Young for a number of his recent works.
