At a recent fan event in New York, Twain explained that she was baking cookies with a friend when they began talking about a celebrity scandal involving Pitt and his former girlfriend Gwyneth Paltrow.
Nude photos of Pitt had been printed in Playgirl magazine, taken while the couple was on vacation.
“I remember I had a girlfriend visiting me and it was near Christmas and we were baking cookies,” Twain said. “I was writing this album and there was a scandal of [Pitt] and Gwyneth [Paltrow] where there was naked photos of him.”
Twain said that at the time she was thinking, “Well, I don’t know what all the fuss is about,” since “we see people naked every day.”
The singer said her thoughts led her to write about them and include Pitt’s name in the verse: “OK, so you’re Brad Pitt. That don’t impress me much.”
Twain insists that the resulting lyric wasn’t “picking on” the famous actor.
“That’s really what I thought. I wasn’t picking on Brad Pitt. But that was just the association in that moment and things we make fusses about and whatever,” she said.
The Canadian country star made the comments while appearing at the headquarters of the streaming service Spotify, where she was interviewed by Billboard.
“That was just the association in that moment and things we make fusses about,” Twain said in explaining why she used Pitt for the song’s lyrics.
“Of course it could’ve been any gorgeous guy.”
Twain’s new album, Now, is set to release on Sept. 29.
