While Drake’s management team hasn’t confirmed that the rapper was actually in the car, he posted photos to his Instagram account over the weekend showing himself in the backseat of his convertible Maybach, complete with California plates.
The rapper was in town for the Toronto Film Festival.
In the dashcam video, the dark-coloured convertible Maybach is clearly visible, and it too has California plates.
The driver of the car with the dashcam — who has chosen to remain anonymous — was driving his Tesla into the city when the Maybach, which led the convoy of cars, pulls right in front of him.
The ensuing black Escalades attempt to cut in front of the driver as well, which would have left him in the middle of the busy intersection. The driver refuses and ends up right behind the Maybach.
Approximately 30 seconds later, stuck in bumper-to-bumper traffic, a pedestrian approaches the Maybach and appears to try to talk to its passenger. That’s when a security guard emerges from one of the Escalades and calmly gets the pedestrian to move on. He then directs the Escalades to pull in front of the driver so the convoy is all connected. (In order to do so, the SUVs had to move into and block the bike lanes.)
The security guard yells at the driver to stop, and that’s when the driver pipes up.
“I have the right of way, I don’t care!” he says to the security guard. “Are you the police?”
“Then run me over bro,” says the security guard. “I have the right of way, bro. I’ll take your Tesla.”
The three Escalades hurriedly squeeze in front of the Tesla, much to the driver’s chagrin.
“Under the Highway Traffic Act in Ontario, the only people who can direct traffic or interfere with traffic in the way that gentleman did is a police officer,” said Toronto police constable Craig Brister. “He doesn’t have the legal authority to stop traffic.”
“However, in that type of situation, I understand what he was trying to do. Obviously, vehicle convoys in traffic are difficult,” he concluded.
Social media users weren’t so forgiving.
Hey @Drake do your fellow 416er's a favour & keep your motorcade out of the bike lanes if you care about this city & its ppl. Thanks ✌️
