The singer revealed the news about her 2009 hit, My Life Would Suck Without You, during an interview with Z100.
“I was making a point to the people working with me, going, ‘This is how much I don’t want to do this,'” she said. “I don’t care about the money. I don’t care about, oh, ‘You’re going to be the most famous person ever if you do this.’ That’s not what holds weight in my life.”
Clarkson said that while Dr. Luke did write the track, she made substantial changes to the song and should have been given co-writing credit.
According to Clarkson, she not only lost the writing credit but also a lot of money.
“There’s hundreds of thousands of dollars gone because of that…or millions actually. That song was huge.”
“There’s a lot of times in my career where you don’t see my name on the song and that’s because sometimes I don’t write them,” she said. “A lot of times I do change the song in a way that probably you should ask for credit, but I don’t because the song was already great – I just made it more me. I think a lot of artists steal credit a lot from writers, which I think is super crappy because that’s their livelihood.”
She continued: “So if I deserve it, I usually ask. And I did deserve it on that song [My Life Would Suck Without You] just because I changed it a bit.”
Clarkson said she was frustrated at that time because “basically they were going to sit on my record unless I did what they wanted.”
“I was so frustrated because I literally said, ‘Anyone in the world but this one person. I will work with anyone you want to put in my path,’” the American Idol alum said.
She added, “It was just this one thing, and I asked not to work with Dr. Luke just because I had not had a good experience with him.”
Clarkson noted that she believes Dr. Luke is “super talented” but “I was like, ‘I don’t want my name near his. I want to pretend this didn’t happen in my life and I want to forget it.’”
The singer stressed that her issues with Dr. Luke are different than pop singer Kesha. The producer and Kesha have been involved in a legal battle over claims of sexual assault and battery since October 2014.
Last year, Clarkson spoke out against Dr. Luke.
“A lot of artists that have worked with him don’t work with him anymore for pretty good, solid reasons,” she said during an interview with The Kyle & Jackie O Show. “He’s not a good person to me. We’ve clashed. I can’t really say anything other than that.”
