When Tom Petty was found at his Malibu home on the night of October 1, he was in full cardiac arrest and had stopped breathing. An EMT crew was able to revive a pulse, but it was too late. Twelve hours later, he was taken off life support and died soon after.
The assumption was that Petty was felled by a massive heart attack, which seems reasonable. But the LA County Corner, the office that’s investigating his death, still isn’t sure.
As you can see by the death certificate, the cause of death has been “deferred,” indicating that they want to wait until the results of the autopsy (toxicology?) report to come back.
